Volume Converter

Convert liters, milliliters, cubic units, US liquid gallons and Imperial gallons with clearly distinguished gallon definitions.

Convert your value

Runs in your browser

Use a decimal point, without commas. Scientific notation such as 1e6 is accepted.

Swap exchanges the units and keeps your entered value.

US Gallon (liquid) (US gal)

Result: 0.264172 US gal

Displayed to 6 decimal places. Display rounding does not change the calculation.

Conversion formula

US gal = L × 1 ÷ 3.785411784

The factors express each unit in L. Negative inputs represent signed changes.

How to use Volume Converter

Translate container capacities and cubic measurements while keeping gallon definitions explicit. One US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters; one Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. They are different units, and neither option represents a US dry gallon.

  1. Enter a value, then choose the source and destination units. The result updates as you type.
  2. Use Swap to exchange the units while keeping your input unchanged. Use ± to change the input sign.
  3. Choose 0–10 decimal places for display. Copy result copies the displayed number and its unit.

How the conversion works

Use liters as the common base: multiply the input by its liter factor and divide by the destination unit's liter factor. A cubic centimeter is exactly one milliliter, while a cubic meter is 1,000 liters.

Base-unit factors for volume converter
UnitOne unit in L
Milliliter (mL)0.001 L
Liter (L)1 L
Cubic Centimeter (cm³)0.001 L
Cubic Meter (m³)1000 L
Cubic Inch (in³)0.016387064 L
Cubic Foot (ft³)28.316846592 L
US Gallon (liquid) (US gal)3.785411784 L
Imperial Gallon (Imp gal)4.54609 L
  • US liquid gallons contain 231 cubic inches. Select the gallon system shown on the original measurement.
  • Volume cannot be converted to mass without a density. Negative volumes here represent signed changes, not container capacity.

Calculations use browser number precision (about 15–16 significant digits). Extremely large or small results use scientific notation; values outside the numeric range show an error.

Reference: NIST unit conversion factors and temperature formulas. Squared and cubed units are derived from the international inch and foot; the acre uses 43,560 international square feet.

Practical examples

A 750-milliliter bottle

Input
750 mL
Result
0.75 L

Divide milliliters by 1,000 to express the bottle's capacity in liters.

A five-US-gallon container

Input
5 US gal
Result
18.92706 L

Multiply by 3.785411784. Five US liquid gallons round to 18.92706 liters.

Five Imperial gallons

Input
5 Imp gal
Result
22.73045 L

Multiply by 4.54609. The same numerical gallon count gives a larger volume than US gallons.

Frequently asked questions

How do US liquid gallons differ from Imperial gallons?

A US liquid gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches (approximately 3.78541 liters). In contrast, the British Imperial gallon is defined as exactly 4.54609 liters. An Imperial gallon is approximately 20% larger than a US liquid gallon, so selecting the correct gallon type is critical.

Can I convert volume directly into weight or mass?

No. Volume measures capacity, whereas mass measures physical matter. Converting volume (such as liters) into mass (such as kilograms) requires knowing the substance's density. For instance, 1 liter of fresh water at 4 °C weighs 1 kilogram, but 1 liter of cooking oil weighs approximately 0.92 kilograms.

Is the US dry gallon included in this tool?

No. This tool supports the US liquid gallon used for liquids and everyday consumer goods. The obsolete US dry gallon (approximately 4.40488 liters) is not included.
