Good Prompt vs Bad Prompt

Learn more about this topic.

The Secret to Getting Good Answers

Think of AI like a highly enthusiastic, incredibly smart intern who just started their first day at your company. They know a lot of general facts, but they know absolutely nothing about your specific business, your customers, or your style.

If you tell the intern: "Write an email about our new product."

They might write a five-page academic essay, or a three-word text message. They don't know what you want!

The Bad Prompt

"Write a marketing email for my bakery."

Why is this bad? It lacks context, tone, target audience, and specific details. The AI will guess, and usually, it guesses wrong.

The Good Prompt

"Act as an expert copywriter. Write a short, friendly, and exciting marketing email for my local bakery in Chicago. We are launching a new line of gluten-free sourdough bread this Saturday. The target audience is health-conscious locals. Include a strong call to action inviting them to our tasting event this weekend. Keep it under 150 words."

Notice the difference? We gave the AI:

  • A Role: Expert copywriter.
  • The Task: Write a marketing email.
  • Context: Local bakery in Chicago launching gluten-free sourdough.
  • Audience: Health-conscious locals.
  • Constraints: Friendly tone, under 150 words, include a specific call to action.

Next time you ask AI for something, pretend you're giving instructions to a human assistant. The clearer you are, the better the result.
