Role Prompting & Chain of Thought

Learn more about this topic.

Putting on Hats: Role Prompting

One of the most powerful things you can do with AI is tell it who to be. This is called Role Prompting.

If you're asking for legal advice (even hypothetically), you wouldn't ask a chef. If you want a recipe, you wouldn't ask a lawyer. By telling the AI to "Act as a [Profession]", you instantly change the flavor of its response.

Try this: "Act as a tough but fair venture capitalist. Review this pitch for my dog-walking app and tell me the top 3 reasons you wouldn't invest."

Showing the Work: Chain of Thought

Have you ever asked someone a complex math problem, and they just blurted out the wrong answer? If they had written down their steps, they might have caught their mistake. AI works the same way!

Chain of Thought is a fancy way of saying: "Ask the AI to think step-by-step."

Instead of: "How many tennis balls fit in a school bus?"

Try: "How many tennis balls fit in a school bus? Think through this step-by-step before giving me the final answer."

By forcing the AI to explain its reasoning, it breaks the problem down. It calculates the volume of a bus, the volume of a tennis ball, accounts for empty space, and then gives you the answer. The results are drastically more accurate.

Combining Them

You can combine these techniques for amazing results:

"Act as a senior logistics manager. I need to figure out the most cost-effective way to ship 500 fragile vases from New York to London. Think step-by-step about packaging, shipping methods, customs, and insurance, and then give me your final recommendation."
