Introduction
If you only use one SEO tool for your website, it should be Google Search Console (GSC). It is completely free and provides data directly from Google itself. Without GSC, you are essentially guessing how your site is performing. Here is a beginner's guide to getting the most out of it.
1. Verifying Your Property
First, you must prove to Google that you own the website. The most reliable method is Domain Verification via DNS records, which covers all subdomains and HTTP/HTTPS variations. Alternatively, you can use HTML tags or link it via Google Analytics.
2. Submitting Your Sitemap
Once verified, navigate to Indexing > Sitemaps. Enter the URL of your XML sitemap (usually yoursite.com/sitemap.xml). This acts as a roadmap, telling Google exactly which pages exist on your site and when they were last updated.
3. Understanding the Performance Report
The Performance report is where you will spend most of your time. It shows four key metrics:
- Total Clicks: How many times users clicked on your site in the search results.
- Total Impressions: How many times your site was seen in the search results.
- Average CTR (Click-Through Rate): The percentage of impressions that resulted in a click.
- Average Position: Where your site ranks on average for specific queries.
Scroll down to the "Queries" tab to see the exact keywords driving traffic. This is a goldmine for discovering new content ideas or optimizing existing pages.
4. Using the URL Inspection Tool
The search bar at the top of GSC is the URL Inspection tool. Paste any URL from your site into it. Google will tell you if the page is indexed. If you just published a new post, you can use this tool to "Request Indexing," prompting Google to crawl the page sooner.
5. Monitoring Page Indexing Issues
Under Indexing > Pages, you will see a list of pages that are not indexed and the reasons why (e.g., "Discovered - currently not indexed," "Crawled - currently not indexed," or "404 Not Found"). This report helps you identify and fix technical bottlenecks preventing your content from ranking.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Google Analytics and Google Search Console?
Search Console focuses specifically on your website's performance and visibility within Google Search. Google Analytics tracks user behavior once they are actually on your website (how long they stay, what buttons they click, etc.).
What does 'Discovered - currently not indexed' mean?
It means Google knows the page exists (perhaps via your sitemap), but hasn't crawled it yet. This is common for new websites. Improving site speed and adding internal links can help.
