Introduction
On-page SEO refers to all the optimizations you make directly on your web pages to help them rank higher. Unlike off-page SEO (like acquiring backlinks), on-page SEO is entirely within your control. Follow this checklist before hitting "publish" on your next article.
1. Title Tag and Meta Description
- Title Tag: Ensure your primary keyword is near the beginning of the title. Keep it under 60 characters so it doesn't get cut off in search results.
- Meta Description: Write a compelling summary (under 160 characters) that includes the keyword and encourages users to click.
2. URL Structure
Keep your URLs short, descriptive, and clean. Include the primary keyword. Avoid using dates or long strings of numbers. For example, /blog/on-page-seo-checklist is much better than /blog/2026/05/15/post-1234.
3. Heading Tags (H1, H2, H3)
Headings structure your content for readability and help search engines understand the hierarchy.
- Use only one H1 tag per page (this is usually your main title).
- Use H2 tags for main sections.
- Use H3 tags for sub-sections within H2s.
4. Keyword Placement and Density
Include your target keyword in the first 100 words of the article. Use it naturally throughout the text, along with synonyms (LSI keywords). Do not force it; readability is always the top priority.
5. Image Optimization
Search engines cannot "see" images. You must describe them.
- File Name: Rename image files before uploading (e.g.,
on-page-seo-checklist.jpginstead ofIMG_9921.jpg). - Alt Text: Write descriptive alt text for every image, explaining what the image shows. This is crucial for accessibility and image search.
- File Size: Compress images to ensure they load quickly.
6. Internal and External Linking
- Internal Links: Link to other relevant pages on your own website. This helps distribute authority and keeps visitors engaged.
- External Links: Link out to authoritative, trustworthy sources when citing facts or statistics. This shows Google your content is well-researched.

Frequently asked questions
Is keyword density still important?
Strict keyword density percentages are outdated. Focus on writing naturally and comprehensively. If you cover a topic deeply, relevant keywords will naturally appear.
Do I have to fill out the meta description?
Yes. While Google sometimes rewrites meta descriptions based on the user's query, providing a well-written description gives you a better chance of controlling your message and improving your click-through rate.
