Crawled - currently not indexed

Learn more about this topic.

The Problem

You check your Page Indexing report in Search Console and see a scary grey spike under the label "Crawled - currently not indexed." Google found your page, read it, but aggressively decided not to put it in their search results.

Why This Happens

This is Google saying, "I see this page, but I don't think it's worth showing to people right now." This is often a quality issue. Your content might be too thin (not enough substance), it might be nearly identical to another page on your site (duplicate content), or Google might just be prioritizing crawling other sites because your crawl budget is low.

The Solution

You need to prove the page's worth. Look at the page objectively. Is it genuinely helpful? Does it answer the user's intent? If it's a thin page (like a tag or category page with no text), consider noindexing it to save crawl budget. If it's an article you want to rank, beef it up. Add unique insights, better formatting, custom images, and more depth.

A Real Example

A tech blogger created 50 different pages for every single model of a laptop, but the text on each page was exactly the same except for the model number. Google flagged them all as "Crawled - currently not indexed." The fix? The blogger deleted the 50 thin pages and created one massive, high-quality "Ultimate Laptop Comparison Guide." Google indexed the new guide immediately.

Your Checklist

  • Identify the URLs in GSC marked as "Crawled - currently not indexed."
  • Evaluate the content: Is it thin, duplicate, or outdated?
  • Improve the page by adding at least 300 words of unique, helpful context or merging it with a stronger page.
  • Ensure the page loads quickly and looks good on mobile.
  • Go back to GSC, inspect the URL, and request indexing again.
